Care Of Lead Acid Batteries
Lead acid batteries have electrolytes in the battery compartment. The following tips on battery care will make you safe while prolonging the battery life.
- The acid is hydrochloric acid. Care should be taken to see that the acid does not spill on your person or clothes. Any spill should be washed with copious quantity of water.
- Top up the water level with distilled water only. Do not use tap water. Top up water level so that the lead plates are just submerged in electrolyte. Do not top up to maximum. There are chances of spillage of acid.
- There is a small hole at the plug for water addition. The hydrogen in the battery escapes through this hole. Ensure that this hole is clear and not blocked.
Care Of Ni-Cad batteries
Ni-Cad batteries are maintenance free batteries. They do not require maintenance. The only care that you have to take is to see that the batteries are not charged until they are completely discharged. Doing so will reduce the life of batteries. Once in 6 months or so run the lawnmower until batteries are completely discharged and then only start charging the batteries. This will increase the life of batteries.
Ni-cad batteries have no such dangerous chemical. However, Ni-cad batteries cannot be disposed off in fire, as there is a danger of the battery exploding.
The choice of the battery is not made randomly. Each lawnmower have an specific battery’s model. A wrong choice could damage the battery or even can ruin some lawnmower parts like the engine.
