10 Tips to Improve the Garden Design
Flowering shrubs used as hedges always complete a garden. Climbers and vines, which also take a long time to grow can be selected and their positions can be marked out on the house, so that they grow against it. The following points would need to be kept in mind when making a new garden:
1. Take time to observe and study the plot of land you have chosen for your garden. Observe the land at different times of the day and even of the year. Observe how the land looks in the different seasons. See where the morning sunlight falls. It is exceedingly important to know the land before designing or landscaping it. If you have a large tract of land, you might even need to wait for a couple of years before you finally lay your garden. Scientifically landscaping a garden is fine but a garden will eventually reflect your personality. That is why it is said that in the creation of your garden you discover yourself.
2. Work out in your mind the kind of features you want your garden to have and consider carefully whether these are compatible with the size and physical surroundings of your plot. You could design your garden to outline the shape of your house, or the flower beds could have fun shapes.
3. Once you have the basic design in your mind, mark out the place where you are going to have cobbled or gravel walks, have a compost pit, lay the drain, or even where you are going to create some special feature like a rock garden or a bower.
4. Trees take a long time to grow, but they will grow strong and deep roots and create the shade and environment that many generations after you will enjoy. So, choose the right kind of trees and shrubs.
5. Study and understand the soil. You will have to first remove any grass that might be growing on your plot. Till or dig the garden and remove rocks, old roots or any other debris that is lying around. If the soil is poor, this is the time to add the organic matter to the soil to enrich it.
6. If you have planned on a lawn and flower garden, then make sure that the two are separated by an edging.
7. Before you put your plants into the soil, place them where you want them. This would allow you to space them well and you will get an idea of how they will eventually look.
8. Spread mulch so that your garden remains healthy.
9. Make sure you water the garden every day or as required.
10. Always get your seedlings or plants from a reputed and reliable nursery, so that you grow healthy, disease-free plants.
