Benefits of Early Lawn Treatment
How your lawn will look depend entirely on your treatment of your lawn. If you want the grass to grow thick and green, and not have any weeds, you will have to Thus, the most important thing is to know your soil. You need to know which grass to grow, the kind of pests that might attack your lawn and the climate changes which have a direct bearing on the way the grass grows.
Thus, depending on the soil and weather conditions, different seed are used. Since the soil is warm in autumn, the seeds will germinate quickly, and the autumn rain will keep the ground moist.
The time taken for the seed to germinate varies, but the first seedlings should start to appear after about 10 days. It is likely that, on providing ideal conditions for the grass seeds to germinate, the weed seeds in the soil will also grow. If there is a large number of weeds, it is possible to kill them with a special weed killer (not the ordinary selective weed killers that are used for lawns), within 14 days of germination of the grass seed. This will only kill the weeds and not the grass. When the grass is about 2 inches high, it can be cut for the first time.
Steps for Lawn Treatment and Fertilizer Application
- a) Late March: this is a granular treatment using a special blend of the best fertilizer for grass you can afford, and pre-emergent herbicide. This prevents crabgrass and foxtail from growing. Key nutrients are released into the soil,
b) April: next comes the liquid treatment using a balanced fertilizer starter and broadleaf weed control, especially dandelions. This is the time when the weeds thrive and this is also the optimum time to control their growth
c) June: this is when top growth is slow and you can use a slow-release granular treatment which will provide important nutrients for deep root feeding. Here again a balanced fertilizer is used. It is in the summer that weeds really thrive and so the broadleaf weed control treatment will work to control them,
d) in July, slow release fertilizer will give the soil the essential nutrients it needs for deep root feeding. It is too hot for high nitrogen, so be careful that the fertilizer does not have high nitrogen content. Surface insect control is done at this time. Watch out for and immediately treat the destructive insects as soon as they appear;
e) Now, in September is when the soil is treated with fertilizer containing high nitrogen content. The turf gets a beautiful green color. This treatment helps your lawn recover from the stress of the summer heat, and lastly
f) In November another granular treatment consisting of a special blend of fertilizer with a very high Nitrogen content is done. This is stored by the plants. They use these nutrients to stay healthy in winter and ensure that in the following spring the grass that grows is rich in nutrients, has stronger roots, and is consequently very green and healthy.
